For the first time, DWS has announced it will apply ESG criteria to money market funds managed in EMEA.
Under the changes, the DWS Institutional ESG Euro Money Market Fund and DWS Institutional ESG USD Money Market Fund will immediately adapt DWS’s ESG criteria. The DWS Euro Money Market Fund will be managed in the same way but will have ESG added to its name next spring.
The DWS money market funds were renamed in order to meet new reform requirements (details see table below). This fundamental change occurs in line with the EU Money Market Fund Reform, which was set in place to improve quality and security of money market funds.
Harm Carstens, Co-Head Short Duration Portfolio Management, EMEA, at DWS explained: “The ESG money market funds universe is still at an early stage and we are pleased to announce these latest advancements. DWS ESG money market funds aim to cater to investors’ increasing demands for sustainable investment vehicles in the money market space.”
He added: “These adjustments mean that non-financial aspects relating to ESG will play a stronger role in the fundamental analysis and portfolio allocation by investors, alongside the traditional financial considerations.”
DWS ESG standards include a set of sector exclusions, norm screens and best-in class rankings. To comply with the new ESG standards no changes in the portfolio allocations were necessary as the ESG quality was already high in DWS money market funds. In September 2018 DWS launched the first money market fund available in the US to apply ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) criteria, the DWS ESG Liquidity Fund.
